Car buying - you cringe just at the thought of it. The tedious search for safety testing results and drivability reviews is at hand, not to mention the new set of payments that will go along with this vehicle. Recently, a new option is under consideration by the average car buyer: hybrid or conventional? At first glance, the appeal of a hybrid is overwhelming; the improved fuel economy, partial silent operation, and green appearance all make it a difficult treat to resist. However, with all the hoopla around hybrids, seeing through the marketing spectacle is important to make an informed decision on whether they are a beneficial option for you. Indeed, the impact on your wallet may actually be higher if you purchase a hybrid!

Let's get a few things out of the way. First, hybrids don't automatically mean amazing gas mileage. Yes, they will be better, often significantly so, than their equivalent conventional model, but all too commonly, the difference is not nearly large enough to expect to pay less in the long run. I recently purchased a new vehicle, and was torn between two sedans, one was a hybrid, and the other was a normal 4-cylinder. With the hybrid, research found that I should expect an average of 35 MPG for my driving style (40% city, 60% highway).

On the other hand, the conventional vehicle (which I drive now) has demonstrated an average of slightly above 28 MPG, based upon the on-board computer. Now, I'm all for reducing our usage of oil, but was the hybrid worth it? Looking into the costs, I discovered quite a sticker shock - the hybrid was nearly $8,000 more! Assuming I drive 10,000 miles a year, at 28 MPG, the conventional engine burns 357 gallons of gasoline.

At $2.00 a gallon, the annual fuel cost is $714. With the hybrid, getting 35 MPG, I'd have used 285 gallons, resulting in an annual fuel cost of $571. Therefore, the hybrid would only save me $143 annually in fuel costs. At this rate, to pay off the $8,000 premium, I'd have to drive for 55 years (or hope fuel prices rise substantially)! Ignoring the 10-year lifetime of the batteries, the payoff simply was not there.

In my case, the decision was simple. The costs were simply too high. To partially offset the diminished mileage between my vehicle and the hybrid, I practice the standard efficient driving techniques, driving under 70 on the highways, accelerating and braking at moderate speeds, and coasting, instead of driving, towards red lights, just to name a few. Only a few days ago, I found myself on a local road with a posted speed limit of 50 MPH.

Setting the cruise control to 53 MPH, I took a look at the real-time fuel consumption meter, and then did a double-take. The car was consistently getting over 39 MPG! This non-hybrid vehicle was performing better than the hybrid equivalent, and all it took was careful and intelligent driving.

The point to drive home (pun intended) here is not that hybrids are bad or a poor financial decision, rather, their usefulness is extremely dependent on your normal driving patterns. Consider a hybrid when the price variance is less than a few thousand, you tend to drive mostly in the city (hybrid mileage is opposite conventional cars, the city range tends to be higher), and the difference in mileage is significant.

Money Saved with A Rapid Tooling Strategy

Rapid Tooling prototypes are often made using FDM technology. The part was made from extruded black ABS and was used for some functional testing.

Initial Prototyping

3M began this phase by creating stereolithography (SLA) patterns with its in-house SLA equipment. Overflow SLA work was sourced to Vista Technologies. The SLA prototypes were used by engineers and industrial designers to check fit and form. The same prototypes were used by 3M packaging engineers to create conceptual mock-ups of product packaging. They also made excellent tools for ergonomic and usability studies.

To mimic the soft under pad of the sanding tool, Vista used PolyJet(TM) rapid prototyping technology. PolyJet was chosen because it can use either of two soft-durometer (a hardness measurement) materials that can be run to gain similar quality parts as SLA technology. TangoBlack, a material with a score of 61 on the Shore A durometer scale, was the best fit. Within days Vista was able to supply 3M with their simulated soft-durometer under pads for more testing.

The bottom pad for the hand sander was prototyped using TangoBlack material from the Polyjet technology. This material is a 61 Shore A material that mimics the properties of santoprene.

At the same time, a gripping/tensioning mechanism for the sanding media was being developed. At this point, the sub-assemblies were merged into a refined set of CAD databases. Additional SLA parts were created to evaluate the new mechanisms. With each new prototype, the team was able to investigate new features in the design.

Because these rapid prototype parts could be created cost-effectively in a matter of hours instead of days or even weeks, the team had the ability to study complex forms and details in a manner not possible using traditional machining and fabrication techniques. In some cases multiple iterations were generated in one or two days.

Second-Generation Rapid Prototypes: More Realistic Simulations
In the second generation of the prototypes, 3M needed the hinge function and material properties to be simulated more realistically. After a few design changes were made to the CAD data, Vista Technologies supplied 3M with a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) prototype.

The FDM part, made from extruded black ABS, allowed for more robust testing and provided similar specified material properties in weight and strength as the final part would have. This prototype was able to handle a variety of tests that allowed 3M to modify their design before production tooling was released.

Rapid Tooling Takes Over

Once 3M completed its work with prototypes, it was time for rapid tooling. Vista Technologies quickly created aluminum tools. Milled at 42,000 rpm with high-speed milling technology and a proprietary fixture system, these tools were made for quick turns and quick modifications.

The aluminum tools could be modified, polished, textured, welded on, and were capable of shooting 10,000-plus parts. Vista Technologies supplied injection-molded parts within two to three weeks of usable CAD data. By getting specified material parts in hand, 3M could complete their required testing.

The rapid tools supplied by Vista Technologies were for multiple parts that made up the sanding products. The parts were made in family tools--meaning several related parts were made in the same tool. By adding runner shut offs to the tools, 3M could turn on or turn off certain parts of the tool--thereby making only the parts they needed. This kept costs down while minimizing wasted material in extra mold inserts. The molds were made with hand pick-outs and manual slides to capture several undercuts in the part design.

3M chose the rapid tooling approach because it allowed them to quickly evaluate different part features and molding parameters. Tooling changes could be completed and parts resampled for evaluation in just a few days. This was a tremendous advantage to 3M.

From an engineering standpoint, they were able to sample several materials for strength and repetitive testing. They were also able to compare the functionality of various latch mechanisms and to check material flow and gate locations (points where material is injected into the tool).

From a marketing standpoint, along with sampling different materials, they also were able to mold parts in a variety of colors to get important feedback from focus groups. By the time databases were released for production tooling, the mold designs had been optimized and the material and color strategies were in place.

By using rapid tooling, 3M discovered many things in the functional prototypes before cutting production tools. The gating was changed on the production tool, the snap-fit features were redesigned, the handle was modified and ultrasonic energy directors were added for sonic welding of parts in final assembly.

Or, if you live on campus, go steal some from the caf... you'll look like a fool... but a cheap fool), 3 cans of frozen grape juice (about $5 total), some measuring spoons, a funnel (if you're in college this should be NO problem), a gallon container (a milk jug works great for free), a balloon or condom, and yeast (they're in the baker section of the supermarket, a 3-pack is usually $1 or you can get the jars for like, $5 and stock up for about 40 gallon's worth).

Side note about yeast: Yeast is what makes this process work. There are many MANY different strains of yeast, and the yeast you buy at the grocery store are not what vintners and beer brewers use. That yeast tends to be more powerful, and much more expensive. Yeast is a living fungus, it comes to life when it comes in contact with water.

When it is given food (sugar), it eats and releases its byproduct (urine), which is alcohol. Gross, right? Using the correct (hey, we're using baker's yeast here) type of yeast will greatly increase the taste of the wine, but if you mix it how I'm about to, it doesn't work out too bad. If this article gains popularity, I may very well create another going into more detail and more flavor.

2. Mix the concentrate! Simple process. Thaw the concentrate (I usually nuke em each for about a minute). Pour them into the container using the funnel (otherwise your carpet/bed/goldfish tank will turn purple... trust me), and add TWO glasses of water, NOT three.

I would actually recommend on the last glass to not pour the whole thing in, the less water is in it, the more sweet the wine will be. But then again, the less wine you'll have. Your call.

Now it's time to aerate the concoction. Put the cap on the bottle and shake the shit out of that thing. Shake it like the neck of the dude that banged your girlfriend. After about a minute of putting the jug through Hell (and hopefully the cap hasn't come off), you're ready for the next step.

3. Make the Mash! Now you're ready to add the sugar. But first, DRY OUT THE FUNNEL. Time after time I have forgotten to, and it's the biggest pain in the ass I've ever experienced. Now that you know better and it is dry, dump 3/4 cup sugar into that chaos that's in the jug, put the cap on, and then shake the shit out of it again. If the sugar settles, you're fucked. It's like Speed, if you go too slow, you're dead (ok, not dead, but the wine will taste shitty).

4. Prep and add the Yeast. Preparing and adding the yeast is more complex than just ripping open a packet and dumping the powder into the juice. If you want the yeast to work properly, you need to HYDRATE it first. Follow the directions on the package in order to do this properly.

If you're too lazy to follow them precisely, just pour some warm water (around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, don't cook the little fuckers) into a cup and then dump the powder into it. DO NOT STIR the yeast right away - For best results, give it time to hydrate on its own before messing with it. Add a little bit of sugar, they seem to like that.

While you're waiting for them to foam, you can pass the time by naming them, reading them stories, reading my other blogs, eating, cleaning up the mess that is now all over your walls, floor, ceiling, bed, cat, etc.

Once it looks like it's got a 1/4" of foam on top, you're good to go. It can take 5-15 minutes for this; be patient! Your wine won't have any alcohol if you are rushed!

5. Mix yeast with Mash! Time for us to mix the yeast into the mash. And be ready with that balloon or condom (the condoms worked out better for me, cause A) it was humorous and B) in college they're free and everywhere). Before you mix in the yeast, make sure you put a pinhole into your balloon/condom to make sure the gasses will be able to get out, but not get in. You should not be able to see the hole without the balloon/condom being blown into, except maybe at a minute level. I used a tack, and it took a while to get the technique down without ripping the condom.

Okay, now that that is done, let's add the yeast mix to the grape mash. Pour it through the funnel, then put that balloon over the cap space on it like you'd jump on a grenade. That's it; you're making alcohol now! Don't get rid of the cap, you'll need it in a week or few.

6. Now it's time to wait... Now we wait. Make sure the jug is in a relatively warm spot (the yeast like it to be about 70 degrees F) and leave it alone. Your friends are going to want to play with it, maybe squeeze the jug because the condom blows up and it looks like a penis is in it; don't let them.

It should look like the picture below; the balloon/condom will start blowing up and may be the butt of many a joke, but when the wine is done, you will be king. An aroma will also start to fill your room, and people maybe begin to call you a wino, but it's okay; you're saving money. If it seems as though that your balloon/condom is NOT blowing up (give it a few days), put your ear to the container... you should be hearing crackling (like rice crispies). If not, the yeast died. Repeat the steps above (and don't worry, dead yeast won't kill you).

It usually takes between one and two weeks for primary fermentation to stop. You'll know this has occurred when the balloon deflates considerably. Place the jug into a cool place like a refrigerator at this time. Also, put the cap back on the jug once the balloon deflates almost completely. These two steps will protect your alcohol's flavor, especially if you don't drink it right away.

Once primary fermentation has stopped, the alcohol content should be sufficient for you to get a good buzz from the wine. If you want to improve the taste, though, you'll need to let it sit for a month or two before drinking it. If you REALLY want it to taste good, transfer it from the current container (called a "fermentor") into another container, making sure to leave all of the gunk on the bottom in the previous vessel.

This gunk, called "sediment" or "dregs" by most, is primarily made up of yeast cells that have died from alcohol poisoning (you try swimming around in your own urine for a while and see what happens!). Though usually not poisonous (at least not any more poisonous than alcohol normally is), they give the wine an odd flavor.

Try like rubbing alcohol. To get the wine out without disturbing the dregs too much, siphon the wine out. Siphoning just means you take a hose and suck the wine from one container to another, leaving a lair of wine and sediment behind. If you don't want any saliva to contaminate the wine, rinse your mouth out with Listerine or vodka prior to siphoning and then use an aluminum foil tip on the end of the hose.

Pull the foil OFF of the hose just before the wine gets to it and you should be fine. Or, if you're really lazy, just pour it very gently into another container. It will still get rid of a lot of the sediment. Let it sit for a couple days again before you drink it.

A few examples of things that you quite easily do without the hand of a professional: Tiling, drywall, painting, flat screen mounting, laying hardwood floor and putting up a fence.

Even if you've never done any handyman type work, you would be surprised how easy most of these activities actually are. With a little guidance from a detailed guide you will be a locally renowned handyman in no time. Get good enough at any of these basic skills and who knows, maybe your friends will be paying you to renovate their houses!

Finally, my third and probably biggest money saver is fixing your own computer. Whether you managed to get a computer virus, or some random spyware there are guides out there outlining exactly how to fix your own computer.

Paying somebody to fix some of these basic problems generally will cost you at least $100. Do a search for how to fix whatever issue you are experiencing and chances are you will find a guide that teaches you the exact steps to rectify your issue.
